In June 1822 three sailors set out from Livorno on the Tuscan coast of Italy and headed for their home port of Lerici, some 36nm up the coast in a 29ft yacht. Earlier this month, Serbia experienced two separate mass shootings that killed more than a dozen people, including children. Serbia, a nation tied for the third highest rate of gun ownership in the world, was shaken by this violence: mass shootings are not a daily occurrence. EVOLUTION A tiny marine creature less than 1.5cm long could rewrite the story ofhow brains developed, and help to settle a long-term disagreement. So claim the scientists who examined 525-million-year-old fossils found in China and discovered what they think is the world’s oldest sample of brain tissue. Malted grains are a key ingredient in whisky making. A popular zero-calorie sweetener is being linked to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Known as erythritol, the sugar substitute occurs naturally at low levels in some plants, like grapes and mushrooms, but is also produced industrially and added to food at higher concentrations. In particular, it’s often used to sweeten low-calorie, low-carbohydrate and ‘keto’ products, which are typically high-fat and low-carbohydrate. It seems to me that history is currently being used for political purposes that have very little to do with the past. One of the aims of History Reclaimed is to reclaim history from that abuse. For decades, we’ve been told to don long sleeves, seek the shade and slather on sunscreen to ward off skin cancer. The problem? New research in the journal Healthcare shows the first two strategies, which work wonders to prevent skin aging, aren’t as effective at warding off cancer. For some scientists, they are the inevitable next stage of staving off the existential threat of climate chaos. For others, they should not even be talked about. Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies, which provide a means of sucking carbon out of the atmosphere, are one of the hottest, and most controversial, areas of climate research. The debate over whether and how to develop CDR has been ignited by the release in March of the final section of the comprehensive review of climate science by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The report found that ways of capturing and storing carbon dioxide, though expensive, may play a role in trying to keep global temperatures within safe bounds.
